MODULE 1 - Introduction to Well-Being in the Primary School
This module introduces the concept of positive psychology in the context of the Well-Being in the Primary School: Guidelines for the Promotion of Mental Health (DES 2015). It explores how Positive Psychology can enhance and support positive pupil and teacher well-being.
Participants will be enabled to:
- Explore the concept of well-being
- Examine the link between well-being and a range of successful outcomes
- Examine the current challenges to children’s well-being
- Explore the concept of Positive Psychology- the science of well-being, including examples of Positive Psychology as applied to education (Positive Education)
- Explore how the language of well-being can be introduced and developed in the primary school
- Explore an overview of the Weaving Well-Being Programme
MODULE 2: Character Strengths, Positive Emotion and Flow
This module focuses on the concepts of Character Strengths, Positive Emotions and Flow. It explores how Character Strengths Positive Emotions and Flow can be incorporated into the classroom and how they enhance and support well-being.
Participants will be enabled to:
- Explore and reflect on research showing the link between Character Strengths and well-being
- Identify and reflect on own Character Strengths using VIA website
- Explore and reflect on research showing the importance of Positive Emotions and Flow to well-being
- Examine how Character Strengths, Positive Emotion and Flow can be linked to the SPHE curriculum
- Explore and reflect on how Character Strengths, Positive Emotion and Flow can be integrated across the curriculum
- Explore and reflect on the application of Character Strengths, Positive Emotions and Flow to enhance personal well-being
- Explore how Character Strengths, Positive Emotions and Flow are introduced and developed in the Weaving Well-Being Programme
MODULE 3: Resilience and Mindfulness
This module will explore the concept of resilience. It will also explore emotion-focused coping strategies and Mindfulness to support resilience and well-being in the classroom.
Participants will be enabled to:
- Explore and reflect on research showing the importance of resilience to well-being
- Explore research on protective factors that enhance resilience
- Explore and reflect on practical strategies for teaching resilience skills in the classroom
- Explore and reflect on research showing how mindfulness is linked to resilience and well-being
- Explore and reflect on practical strategies for teaching mindfulness in the classroom
- Explore and reflect on how resilience and mindfulness can be integrated across the curriculum
- Explore and reflect on the application of Resilience and mindfulness to enhance personal well-being
- Explore how resilience and mindfulness are introduced in the Weaving Well-Being Programme
MODULE 4: Positive Relationships and Self-Efficacy
This module will explore the relationship between Positive Relationships and Self-Efficacy. It will include practical strategies to develop positive relationships in the classroom and their impact on teaching and learning.
Participants will be enabled to:
- Explore and reflect on research showing the importance of Positive Relationships to well-being
- Explore and reflect on research showing the importance of self-efficacy beliefs to well-being and practical strategies for developing self-efficacy beliefs in the classroom
- Examine how Positive Relationships and Self-Efficacy can be linked to the SPHE curriculum
- Explore and reflect on how positive relationships and self-efficacy can be integrated across the curriculum
- Explore and reflect on the application of Positive Relationships and Self-Efficacy to enhance personal well-being
- Explore practical strategies for enhancing positive relationships in the classroom and resolving conflicts quickly
- Explore the difference between fixed and growth mindsets and how growth mindsets can be cultivated in the classroom
- Explore how Positive Relationships and Self-efficacy are introduced and developed in the Weaving Well-Being Programme
MODULE 5: A Whole School Approach to Well-Being and SSE
This module focuses on how a Whole School Approach to Well-Being supported by the SSE process can fostering a sense of well-being, belonging and connectedness and build a culture of positive relationships and positive learning
Participants will be enabled to:
- Explore and reflect on research showing the importance of a whole school approach to well-being
- Explore and reflect on contributing factors to a successful whole school approach
- Explore and reflect on practical strategies to implement at a whole school level
- Review the role of parents in a successful well-being programme and the different options available to enhance their level of involvement
- Explore strategies to enhance teacher well-being
- Engage with the SSE process
